Acupuncture

  • What is Acupuncture and How Does it Work?

Acupuncture is a safe and effective healing modality that has been practiced for thousands of years. Originating from traditional and classical Chinese Medicine, acupuncture involves the insertion of small stainless steel needles into specific points on the body to stimulate energy flow, promote balance, relive pain, and remind the nervous system how to regulate and the body to heal itself. Acupuncture points are connected by meridians (energetic pathways) through which Qi (life force) flows throughout the body. The meridians transport qi and blood to the cells, tissues, and organs. By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, the body’s natural ability to re-balance is prompted. The immune system, the autonomic nervous system, respiratory, lymphatic, among other systems in the body are stimulated during acupuncture. Studies reveal that clients with many types of complaints & conditions respond well to acupuncture, with positive results. Many seek treatment for symptoms that Western medicine cannot test for, explain, or diagnose. While diet, lifestyle, and rest play a huge part in wellness, many find that receiving acupuncture alone can help with issues that limit their well-being.

    How does it work?

Acupuncture needles stimulate specific points on the body. These ‘acupoints’ correspond to the organs & systems within the body. By inserting needles into these points, the flow of Qi is regulated. Qi (pronounced “chee” is our life force energy, our vital energy). Through the freeing-up of stagnant Qi, & the regulation of the flow of Qi, the body learns to re-balance itself. Acupuncture also releases endorphins, the body's natural sedatives, painkillers, and relaxants; putting the client into deep relaxation, also known as the ‘Quantum Field’, where healing happens, along with improved circulation and blood flow; reducing inflammation and promoting the vitality that is our birthright! Acupuncture regulates the nervous system to reduce stress and invite a new baseline for peace and relaxation in the body/mind/spirit.

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine are systems of medicine that prod the body to remember to return to homeostasis (the ability to heal itself). It’s very scientific, and also like magic!

  • Adjunctive Therapies Sometimes Utilized in Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine

Cupping Therapy is a method using glass or plastic cups to create localized pressure by vacuum, or suction. The Chinese have been using this technique since ancient times, and has been found in ancient records dating back 3500 years. Some cupping sets require the use of fire to create a vacum, while others have valves and a pump, so that the practitioner can control how much suction is utilized. The suction from the cups can penetrate deep into the tissue, allowing for the release of toxins, to relax muscular and fascial tension, and stimulate the lymphatic system. Cupping can help clear the qi and blood vessels and activate the skin. Cupping is widely known to promote circulation, relieve pain, and revitalize tissues (triggering collagen and elastin production). Modern studies show that cupping can treat cellulite, scars, and stretch marks. The appearance of a “reddish, elevated, millet-like skin rash’ (aka petechiae) results, which resolves over the course of a few days.

Gua Sha is a healing technique of traditional East Asian medicine, and was alos a home-remedy. Sometimes called ‘coining, spooning or scraping’, Gua sha is defined as instrument-assisted press-stroking of a lubricated area of the body to intentionally create therapeutic petechiae called ‘sha’. Gua sha removes Qi and blood stagnation (which causes pain and many types of dis-ease). Modern research shows that gua sha produces an anti inflammatory and immune response that persists for days following a single treatment, accounting for the relief that patients feel from pain, stiffness, fever, chill, cough, wheeze, nausea and vomiting (among other complaints). Gua sha is effective in acute and chronic internal organ disorders including liver inflammation in hepatitis, and stagnation of phlegm in the lungs. The appearance of a “reddish, elevated, millet-like skin rash’ (aka petechiae) results, which resolves over the course of a few days..

Moxibustion involves the burning of mugwort (an herb callled Artemisia vulgaris) on or over specific acupuncture points on the body. Moxibustion stimulates the flow of qi (life force). A multitude of common ailments and diseases can be traced to imbalances or stagoation of qi flow. Moxibustion is often used in conjunction with acupuncture therapy. By applying heat to the acupoints, moxibustion aims to free blocked qi and restore flow, to promote healing. The application of moxibustion is warm and relaxing.
