Acupuncture is a Known Therapy for Boosting the Immune System
Here comes winter! Seasonal changes, stress, common illnesses, and the ongoing presence of compromised immunity in a world out of balance with nature. Many people seek natural ways to support their immune systems. Plants are one of my favorite ways to support and boost my immune system, and obviously, so is Acupuncture. Rooted in Classical, Traditional, and Modern Chinese Medicine, Acupuncture and its adjunct therapies (Cupping, Gua Sha, Moxibustion to name a few), is an effective, holistic approach that can enhance immune health, allowing the body to fend off illness and build protection against external and endogenous parasitic and pernicious factors. And if and when we do catch a virus or come down with a cold, we can recover more rapidly than we would if our immune systems were compromised…We get speedy recovery because we have strong immunity, Here at Harmon Acupuncture in Omaha, Nebraska, I see firsthand how acupuncture can strengthen immunity and support overall well-being. Acupuncture works to strengthenthe immune system by.....
1. Reducing Stress in the Heartmind/Body and Lowering Cortisol Levels
Chronic stress is one of the biggest factors that can challenge the immune system. When stressed, the body produces higher levels of cortisol, a hormone that, when elevated and released into the system for extended periods, can suppress immune function and make it harder for the body to fight off infection and other invaders.
Acupuncture helps lower cortisol levels by calming the nervous system and promoting relaxation. During an acupuncture session, the brain releases endorphins and other feel-good chemicals that reduce stress and help the body return to a baseline that is a balanced state in the mind, body and heart. Lower stress levels correlate to a stronger immune first-response system, allowing your body to defend itself more effectively against all the pathogens.
2. Improving Qi Circulation and Blood Flow
Acupuncture increases blood circulation and strengthens Qi (the life force of energy flowing through your bodies), delivering more oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells to areas of the body that need them most. When needles are placed at specific points, they stimulate microcirculation, or the movement of blood within the smallest blood vessels, the improved blood flow in general allows white blood cells and other immune factors to travel more efficiently through the body, helping it detect and address potential threats, and areas in need.
Enhanced circulation also speeds up healing, making acupuncture a valuable tool for recovering from colds, flu, or other seasonal illnesses. By keeping Qi and blood flow strong, acupuncture supports a healthy immune response and helps maintain optimal function.
3. Boosting White Blood Cell Production
White blood cells, especially natural killer (NK) cells, are a critical part of the body’s immune defense system, attacking viruses, bacteria, and abnormal cells. Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the production and activity of white blood cells, giving the immune system a powerful boost.
During acupuncture, the body’s natural immune response is enhanced, increasing the number and activity of NK cells and T cells. This immune boost is particularly helpful when exposure to viruses and bugs is higher, or during times of stress when immunity is naturally lower.
4. Regulating Inflammatory Responses
Inflammation is a natural response to injury or infection, but when inflammation becomes chronic, it can actually weaken the immune system, because it is over-worked. Acupuncture helps balance the body’s inflammatory response by regulating cytokines—proteins that signal immune responses.
By encouraging a balanced inflammatory response, acupuncture supports the immune system without overstimulating it. This regulation is especially beneficial for those with autoimmune disorders or chronic inflammatory conditions, as acupuncture can help the body modulate its response and promote a healthier immune system.
5. Enhancing Energy Flow and Qi Balance
In Chinese Medicine, a balanced flow of Qi (the body’s vital energy) is essential for health and immune strength. Chinese Medicine theory holds that a blockage or imbalance in Qi flow can weaken immunity, making the body more susceptible to illness. Acupuncture helps restore the free flow of Qi along the body’s meridians, strengthening what we call “Wei Qi” or the body’s protective energy.
This focus on Qi makes acupuncture uniquely suited to not only treat symptoms but also to act as a preventative treatment. By ensuring your energy pathways are clear and balanced, acupuncture keeps your immune system functioning at its best, helping you stay healthy year-round.
